YVONNE CHEN
PIANO
From playing in hospitals, schools, and community centers to performing in Carnegie Hall, Taiwanese-American pianist Yvonne Chen enjoys programming site-specific performances, as well as creating a logical yet balanced array of music blending the familiar with the unfamiliar, the old and the new, and the traditional with the avant-garde in a single program. Previous self-curated programs have ranged from “Exploration of Harpsichord Music from the 20th Century” and “MADNESS” featuring Rzewski’s de profundis, for speaking pianist, to “Murakami Music”, a recital of solo piano works featured in and inspired by the novels of Haruki Murakami.
A native of suburban Washington, D.C., Chen received her B.M. from the Juilliard School studying with Matti Raekallio and her M.M. and D.M.A. from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music with Brian Connelly. She is currently Piano Teacher at St. John’s School (Houston, TX) and pianist and founder emeritus of Houston-based contemporary music collective, Loop38.
