Just two days before Franz’s 206th birthday, Context presents two of his greatest—but rarely performed—chamber works. The Fantasie in C for Violin and Piano, written in his last year, is his sublime violin masterpiece, with an unparalleled range from heartbreaking melodies, to brilliant technical fireworks, to moods of haunting meditation—and with colors and effects possible only on the kinds of instruments he wrote for. The ‘Grand Duo’ is his grandest composition for the rich sonorities and textures of piano four-hands. Hear both of these unforgettable works performed with our world-class Graf piano, built in Schubert’s Vienna at the time he was writing them.
